[Horned Owl]

Here is a summoner mech that I have been working on for quite some time and just had it 3D printed in color.

The mech was modeled in 3DS Max and textured in Photoshop.

First pic is a render of the mesh in 3DS max:

The following images are the pix of the printed result. The printed mech was not painted at all, this is how it came out of the printer. It stands 2.25" tall.

I figured the sandstone looked a bit fuzzy but I've still been curious to see how something like this would come out and that's not to bad being full color. Pretty durable?

I dont know if this is the same printer i've used in the past but my experience with colored sandstone prints is that they are a little on the heavy side and if you drop them or handle them a little roughly it will shatter. I'm a bigger fan of the mono colored plastics.

It is the same printer as used by Figureprints to print their Warcraft models. My particular print looks more fuzzy because of the small size of it.

There is a standard treatment and hardening process that must be done after it comes out of the printer. The final product is not that brittle, but if you dropped it on a hard floor, it will break.

It would have no problem in using it as a game piece for the tabletop or other standard handling. I would say it is a little bit stronger than a well assembled Ral Partha miniature.

Very cool! some heft would be nice I would imagine as compared to mostly hollow plastic.

Don't they have that superglue like of varnish that brings out the colour and makes it strong for that type of print?

Polyurethane. The indoor kind. Matte or Gloss or Semi

If I had a 3D printer, I'd so make minis of the MW:O designs since they don't have the rights to officially release anything. It'd be awesome. Eventually someone will make a killing on Ebay doing that until they're shut down.

That Summoner is super impressive.

I am certain these would make a killing being sold to us players. However, I am not planning on breaking any terms of agreement with PGI or anyone.

I work at said 3D Printing company. We are trying to get something going with PGI and/or Topps to print these officially. I'm only a modeler, we have another person who does business deals, scheduling shows and such, so I am unsure who they have contacted exactly about this other than Russ Bullock.

I was stoked when I got the go ahead from the boss to print my Summoner. So I prepped it for printing, set it with a batch of other prints that were scheduled, had it printed. After the print, I did all the required post-print procedures to complete them, i.e. the penetrate hardener (yes, a superglue-like varnish) and the waxing.

Well Ral Partha minis were about as durable as eggs. At least the multipart ones. One reason I absolutely dislike metal minatures, ding up and break far easier when at a couple feet plastic usually just bounces. Not familar with the WoW figures but I remember something like that years ago, the stepping looked bad then though.

The Thor looks pretty good though. I've seen the fuzzy from the material when I was looking at it before but it still doesn't look bad when I can see panel lines and the color like good. Almost wonder how long until we can do that economically with plastic. I guess with minis though I do like painting...even if I could do far better in Photoshop.

I been building some of the available papercraft models scaled 1:40 built by BLaaR and Shiftdel
Also there is an incredible atlas based on MWO poly set by Parman01

Would it be possible for you to cooperate with some of the 'unfolders' from the papercraft community and convert your 3D model so that it can be printed on paper as well?

The technology for this stuff is coming down in price all the time. I'm hoping it's going to start a proper revival for Battletech miniatures
